A built-in BBQ is a component in a cabinet you are building or buying, so the order of operations matters: choose the BBQ first, get its installation manual, then design the cut-out, clearances and gas supply around it.
What to decide before buying
Gas supply. Natural gas if you have it. The bayonet and connection are licensed gasfitter work. LPG needs a ventilated cylinder cupboard designed into the cabinet.
Size and cut-out. Built-ins are specified by the cut-out they need. A two-burner Weber Q needs far less bench than a five-burner. Draw the outdoor kitchen around the manual’s dimensions.
Material. Enamelled steel is fine under a roof away from the sea. Near the coast, buy 304 stainless or expect rust at the seams.
Ventilation and clearances. The manual gives minimum clearances to walls, overhead structures and combustible bench materials. Timber benchtops need a heat shield.

Natural gas or LPG for a built-in BBQ?
If the house has natural gas, use it: no cylinders, lower running cost, and the bayonet is a one-off gasfitter job. LPG built-ins need a cylinder cupboard with ventilation to the outside, which the cabinet design must allow for.
What clearances does a built-in BBQ need?
The manufacturer's installation manual specifies clearances to combustible surfaces, cut-out dimensions and ventilation. Australian gas installation rules (AS/NZS 5601) apply, and a licensed gasfitter must connect natural gas. Get the manual before the benchtop is cut.
Which stainless steel is best outdoors?
304 grade resists corrosion far better than 430 and is what you want within a few kilometres of the coast. Many cheaper stainless BBQs use 430 for the body and 304 only for the lid. A magnet sticks to 430 and not to 304, which is a quick test in the shop.
